Ethan Fein

Ethan Fein plays guitar, five-string banjo, and tenor banjo, and is also a composer, musical arranger, and band leader.

Ethan co-produced, composed, arranged, led the band, and played on Old Bones Odyssey. Ethan co-produced, arranged, led the band, and played on Ellen C Kaye’s recording Ice Wine – songs for Christmas and dark winter nights. He was also the musical director, arranger, band leader and musician for multiple productions in partnership with Ellen C Kaye including at the Lower East Side boite, Moscow 57, the radio show “Straight From Delancey,” podcasts, and pop-ups in New York, New Orleans, and elsewhere.

Ethan has performed as an accompanist with Oliver (hit records: “Good Morning Starshine” and “Jean”); Ellen C Kaye, Elly Stone, Marvin Hamlisch, Eartha Kitt, Bernadette Peters, Joel Grey, Carole King, Kristin Chenoweth, Gregory Hines, Maurice Hines, Wayne Brady, Ben Vereen, Ann Hampton Callaway, Regina Carter, Regis Philbin, Nell Carter, Maureen McGovern, Eleanor Reissa, Sally Mayes, Cy Coleman, Ann Reinking, Allan Jones, Sara Zelle, Julie Budd, Buddy Greco, Monica Patton, Arthur Tracy (“The Street Singer”), Tad Truesdale and His Afro-Caribbeans, Tony Randall, the Queens Symphony Orchestra, and the house band for the benefit concerts for Paul Newman’s Hole In The Wall Gang Camp.

Ethan was the guitarist in the original Broadway production of Cats for 18 years, and the orchestra house contractor for the last 10 years of the run; and a substitute guitarist on Broadway in West Side Story (1980), 42nd Street (both productions 1980 and 2001), The Full Monty, and Bring Back Birdie.

As official guitar teacher for The Sound of Music (1998 – 1999), he taught Rebecca Luker, Laura Benanti, and Richard Chamberlain how to play “Do Re Mi” and “Edelweiss.”

In other theatrical productions, he played guitar and banjo at the Papermill Playhouse in Anything Goes; Victor Victoria; Funny Girl; A Chorus Line; Annie; and Hello Dolly. In various other theaters he played in The Threepenny Opera, Always Patsy Cline with Sally Strothers, A Chorus Line, Roadside, Footloose, and Godspell.

He performed on many recordings including the original Broadway cast album of Cats, jingles, industrial shows, and the television show Sesame Street.

Ethan composed music for a number of theatrical projects including The Red Badge of Courage, The Black Russian, The Buck ‘n’ Yo Show, and Radical.

Ethan co-produced, with Jackie Presti, the cd You Oughta Be On Broadway: A Richard Rodgers Collection for Ladies of All Ages, featuring performances by Penny Fuller, Liz Callaway, Brigid Brady, Nadine Isenegger, Sally Mayes, Anne Runolfsson and others, along with the same recorded tracks without vocals to allow women and girls to sing along.
